– esther ko ( aka essie ), 5'4, age 20 with dyed red hair, curly and often in space buns
– a dance major, raised in a good religious home
– she is the only surviving member of the freshman dance team who had been reported as killed in a bus accident en route to school after a dance competition. in truth, an evil spirit had entered each of the students one by one, turning them against each other, taking them down a murderous path
– essie had been somewhat sheltered in her upbringing though she had dipped her toe into the waters of rebellion once in a while, especially when she began dating – she did not believe in spirits until she was nearly possessed by one
– the school had either been misled or has incredible PR manipulation skills as the public had not suspected any foul play, instead memorializing the girls with a plaque outside the fine arts building
– only essie knows the truth, but due to her bubbly, kind, and almost ditzy nature, she knows no one would believe that she had faced down the spirit herself – a vengeful former dancer who never had a chance to shine and met an early end due to school negligence. essie forced her out of the body of a friend, eventually drowning the demonic dancer
– it was her inherent goodness and cunning that allowed her to escape the bloodbath, though she still has nightmares of being covered in blood
– in order to cope with the trauma, she's begun to learn protective measures against such evil, balancing dance and school with knowing how to use various weapons
– for two years in high school, she dated a sweet but emotionally unavailable boy, has no idea he had been trying to keep her from the darkness of his own world – good thing he taught her a few things about archery before they broke up
– despite her family's reluctance, she is now seeing a therapist though she cannot be fully honest about what she has experienced
– dreading her inevitable sequel
